No contact day 4: the first ordinary day

Day 4 is often the first day with a flat stretch in it — an hour or two where you were just doing something. It won't last, and its return later in the day can feel like a setback.

What goes wrong on day 4

Assuming the good hour was the recovery and the bad evening was a relapse. Neither is true. Recovery this early looks like alternating current, not a rising line.

None of that is a prediction about you specifically. Day 4 looks different depending on how long you were together, who ended it, and how many times you've tried before — this is the shape it takes most often, and the part of it worth preparing for.

One thing to do today

Notice the hour that was fine, and note what you were doing in it. That's data: it's the first evidence about what actually occupies your attention, which is the thing that eventually replaces the loop.

A slip costs a day. The spiral after it — "I've ruined it, why bother" — is what costs the month. If today didn't go the way this page describes, that's information about which door is still open, not a verdict on whether you can do this.
